Greifswald
Greifswald is a Hanseatic and university city with about 53 000
inhabitants and is situated at the Baltic Sea and close to the
Polish border. With its more than 550-year-old university it hosts around
12 000 students which are welcome at various restaurants, pubs, clubs and
bars. Here, it is perhaps to mention that Greifswald had a rich pub
history. (At the beginning of the 19th century around 80 pubs made
their business in Greifswald.)
Not only Greifswald's university is old but also the city alone has
a long history. It reaches into the and is closely
bound to the Eldena monastery which was a favourite motive of
Caspar David Friedrich - a well-known romantic German painter.
About the monks of Eldena established a market place which
remained the main square till nowadays. The legend says that one
day monks saw a griffin over a forest and, thus, the settlement's
name became Greifswald.
